Care benefit in Norway

There are several benefits available in the event of illness in the family.

Omsorgspenger

If a child under 12 years of age or a person who takes care of that child falls ill, one is entitled to obtain care benefit (Norw. omsorgspenger) for 10 or 15 days (if we have up to 2 children under 12 years old) per year. The first 10 working days are paid by the employer, then the payments are made by the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV). Single parents and parents of chronically ill children can apply to NAV to increase the limit of days off. The employer is obliged to take care of that. The employer should be provided with a certificate issued by a physician or hospital confirming that the wife is not able to take care of the child.

Pleiepenger

Persons with children under the age of 18 who require long-term, round-the-clock care may apply for a nursing allowance or attendance allowance (Norw. pleiepenger). The full amount of the benefit can only be received for 1 year. Afterwards, the allowance may be collected at a rate of 66 percent. We can prepare an application.

The attendance allowance can also be obtained if we take care of a sick person close to us during the last phase of life. The allowance can be obtained for a maximum of 60 days in this case. In addition, the sick person must stay at home and the patient’s consent to be taken care of must be obtained. If he is admitted to a hospital or hospice, the right to the benefit ceases to exist.
